"Essays take their tone and momentum from the explicit presence of the writer in them and the distinctiveness of each writer's perspective. That makes an essay definetely subjective-not in the skewed, unfair sense of subjectivity, but in the sense that essays are conversations, and they should all have the naunces and attitude that any conversation has." (Atwan: 24)
I chose this quote by Susan Orlean for several reasons. She states that an essay should be related to conversation. This is a bold statement and I completely agree with her 100 percent. The tone of the writer should be very evident and easy to identify. It should be what the writer's personality is like and how they feel about that certain topic or subject. She explains that newspapers rarely generate great essays because of this problem, in that newspapers lack a strong tone of voice. The reading is not attractive and does not fully capture the reader's attention. Newspaper articles are meant to be objective and informative, but this example or comparison provides more help in what is expected or required to put together a great essay. Once again, this quote by Susan Orlean shows how important voice and tone is in an essay. It is very vitale and ket to capture the reader's attention from the very beginning. If the writer is speaking through their own personality, they will prove to the reader that they truly care about the subject, which will therefore made the essay more enjoyable as a reader.
